We have a do-nothing Congress, we need a do-something President.
For over a year and a half our movement has pushed Congress to a pass comprehensive immigration reform bill. They showed us definitively on their last day before going on recess that they will not act to fix our broken immigration system. The only bills they are eager to move forward are those that target and harm our community more.
Our immigration system created a humanitarian crisis where millions of families live in fear of losing a loved one to deportation. Since Congress will not act to solve this crisis, the president has a moral obligation to do so. President Obama is the only person in the federal government with the will and the power to change the lives of millions of people.
At the end of the summer, the White House will likely announce changes to the way immigration law is enforced—in particular, which cases will be prioritized and de-prioritized. By focusing government resources away from undocumented immigrants who are not criminals, who have been here for several years, with familial ties to the country, who work and pay taxes, and meet other qualifications, the White House can give administrative relief to millions of undocumented people. Administrative relief will almost definitely be a case-by-case process similar to DACA.
The scope of this relief depends largely on activists like you. We need to continue to pressure the White House to go as big and bold as possible with administrative relief in order to help the largest number of immigrants possible. We need to pressure President Obama to deliver the relief that he has already promised.
This month, our activists are standing up to fight for families all across the country. We will make sure that President Obama hears our demands for relief. To get involved and find an event in your community, please visit StopSeparatingFamilies.org!
